A great friend who would do anything for anyone in need. I was literally homeless, had no car, no job, and he gave me a place to live. Helped me get a car, got me a job. He came through for me in a tough time in my life. Never asked me for anything. Just wanted to see me get back on my feet. That was 23 years ago and I will never forget what he did for me. That’s the kind of person he was. Rest in peace my brother!

Mr H was such an incredible person! I am so grateful that 2 of my kids got to experience Camp Schmidt with him. We still sing his camp fire song and I will never forget his wild tractor rides! We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Hartling — an extraordinary educator and human being whose presence made a lasting impression on so many. I had the privilege of seeing him in action at Melwood Elementary and later saw his passion for teaching shine through his work as a specialist at Camp Schmidt. Mr. Hartling had a gift for connecting with children in a way that was both inspiring and unforgettable. His kindness, humor, and dedication to outdoor education left a mark not only on the students he guided but also on the educators who had the honor of knowing him. To the Hartling family — please accept my heartfelt condolences. May you find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on in every child he taught and every life he touched (including mine). His spirit will continue to echo in the woods, trails, wagon rides, at the fireside and outdoor classrooms he so loved.

I just met Steve at Camp Schmidt on May 5th. In the evening, after dinner, while he was collecting T-shirt money, we chatted about his teaching experience, working at Camp Schmidt, his part-time job, and his family. I could see in that brief encounter that he was a pillar for his wife and sons and the thousands of students he engaged with throughout the years. He was so alive. Hard to believe he's gone. My heart goes out to his family and everyone who knew him.
