A repast, or funeral reception, is a meal shared by family and friends after a funeral service. The food served at a repast can vary depending on the family's preferences, but often includes: Comfort foods: Classic comfort foods like fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and potato salad are common in the American South. Traditional foods: Foods that are traditional to African, Caribbean, or Southern funeral traditions may be served, such as banana pudding, black-eyed peas, and oyster dishes. Sandwiches: A sandwich platter is a popular choice because it's easy to prepare and allows guests to eat and talk without being too formal. Casseroles: Casseroles are a common food served buffet style at repasts. Meats and cheeses: Meats and cheeses are also common foods served at repasts. We especially appreciate having food for all diets, including gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and hongry. The idea behind repast food is to provide mourners with something to eat after the service so they don't have to cook a meal at home. A funeral director can arrange catering for a repast, or the host can decide to hold the event at a restaurant, banquet hall, or someone's home.
