Recognizing Fraud and Suspicious Messages

Sharing your Meal Train page and properly engaging with your support network is an important part of providing meals for someone in need. We want to help you do this in a safe and effective way.

Online Fraud Schemes and Phishing Scams

Be cautious if someone you don’t know contacts you about your Donation Fund. The most common type of scam includes:

  • Someone contacts you via text message or email claiming to be the recipient or their spouse and requesting that you:
    • Change the recipient email
    • Transfer the ownership of donations to them
    • Link a bank account number
    • Provide them your password to sign into MealTrain.com

STOP AND VERIFY. Call them by phone, check your address book, or ask a person who knows them if the information is correct. Scammers may impersonate the recipient to try and steal donated funds. Once they link a bank account and the funds are paid out, the funds are not recoverable.

If you receive suspicious transfer requests, PAUSE, then report them to contact@mealtrain.com.

How can I avoid fraud schemes?

  • Only sign in through MealTrain.com’s official website: Always go to www.mealtrain.com directly to log in. Look for the gray lock in your browser’s address bar to confirm the site is securely encrypted.
  • Be cautious when reviewing emails and texts: MealTrain.com will never ask you to accept an individual donation outside our platform. If you receive messages that seem suspicious, avoid clicking on any links.
  • Verify any communication: If you're unsure if an email from MealTrain.com is legitimate, forward it to our team at contact@mealtrain.com.
  • Protect your personal information: Avoid sharing personal details such as your address, phone number, personal email, or bank account details directly on your Meal Train page or with people you do not know. If you receive a suspicious request, report it to us immediately.
  • Confirm your beneficiary’s email address: If you are adding a recipient for a donation, confirm their email address personally. If you do not know the recipient well, confirm the email address with someone who does.
